Arranging and Orchestration Rates and FAQs

Each project is unique, but generally I start out by offering a free consultation to get an idea for the requirements of the job, your overall vision for what you want to achieve, and a ballpark idea of your budget.
If it seems like the project is a good fit, I will furnish a quote based on my rates listed below. Once you approve the quote, I will start work. For large projects, I require a 50% deposit upfront before I begin.
For most projects, I begin with a very basic complimentary MIDI mockup audio track to give an idea what the finished product will might sound like. This gives us a chance to discuss any changes you might want to make before we proceed to the engraving of parts and score.
Upon delivery of the finished product, I will furnish an invoice.

Some level of revision is required for almost every project. I will fix any engraving errors on my part free of charge. For minor revisions, I charge my flat rate of $50/hr. For more involved revisions, I may provide another quote for the additional work. I reserve the right to refuse revisions that drastically change the scope of the work.

I understand that music budgets can often be tight. I am committed to working with my clients to making projects work within their means. Often this means scaling back the scope of the project, but I am sometimes able to offer discounts for educational institutions, churches, non-profits, etc.

At project completion, I will provide a shared Google Drive folder for you to retrieve your files. The files will be in PDF format in standard US Letter size unless otherwise specified.
Unfortunately, I am unable to offer printing/music preparation services at this time, though I hope to be able to in the future.

How much do you charge?
My rates are loosely based on the American Federation of Musician Rates for Electronic Media Agreements.
Rates are determined by 4 bar pages. To determine how many pages of music your project will require, simply divide your bar count by 4. For fractions of pages, the count is rounded up to the next quarter page.
If the arrangement or orchestration includes large portions of rest (such as part of a pop song), I will adjust the rate accordingly in your quote.
If the tempo is very fast (for example, 3/4 counted in 1), I may also adjust your rate to be lower.
If the orchestration/arrangement is very small (solo, duo, or trio), I may charge my $50 hourly rate if it will be less than the per-page rate.
Example: 53 bar song, arranged for string quartet
62 bars divided by 4 = 15.5 pages
15.5 pages @ $30 (4 bar page, 10 lines or fewer) = $465
Example: 75 bar song, arranged for 15-piece theater orchestra
44 bars divided by 4 = 18.75 pages
18.75 pages @ $35 (standard 4 bar page + 5 additional lines @ $1 per line) = $656.25
If you have any questions about pricing, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
